Lajares Walking Tour
Sightseeing in and around Lajares
Fuerteventura and its places of interest
Beautiful, white sandy beaches, clear turquoise water and fantastic waves – these are the images that spring to mind for many when they think of Fuerteventura… But there is also plenty to discover and do away from the coast. Because between the volcanic rock, the desert landscapes and the seemingly deserted villages, there are still one or two gems to discover.
So put your shoes on (we only recommend flip-flops for the very hardy), a water bottle in your rucksack, sun cream on your face and off you go! We’ll take you with us on our Lajares Walking Tour through the beautiful surfing village of Lajares!
Lajares Walking Tour – Let’s Go!
1 You start your Lajares Walking Tour at the small church square. The Ermita de San Antonio de Padua church is located just outside the square. It was probably built in the 18th century, but we don’t know for sure. The interior of the church is made entirely of wood. Pews and a small altar adorn the small, simple church. The church is generally closed and only opens for mass every 3rd Sunday of the month at 6.00 pm.
Lajares Walking Tour – historic buildings
2 Right next to the church is the next photo opportunity on the Lajares Walking Tour: the two historic windmills! These were used for a long time for the production of gofio. Now they can only be seen from the outside.
Did you know that there are male and female windmills on Fuerteventura? There are the multi-storey MolinOs (m) with a built-in control bar where the mill blades can be turned into the wind and the MolinAs (f), which are built flatter (so the sacks of grain have to be dragged less) and have a greater grinding capacity…
From the windmills, follow the road downhill towards the town centre. If you want to take a little breather, we recommend a snack from one of the bakeries: both the Paneteca and the French bakery El Goloso have everything your heart desires, from sweet to savoury! And if you’re feeling peckish, the pizza at La Cancela is fantastic! Enjoy the flavour!
Lajares Walking Tour – Flora & Fauna
3 Strengthened and equipped with hiking provisions, you continue the Lajares Walking Tour. You’ll cross the roundabout, follow the road diagonally to the left and you will reach the small donkey family of Lajares. These charming locals are always happy to see you and are happy to be petted. And who knows, you might even happen to have a carrot with you!
4 Not far from the donkeys you will find a small bodega. La Viña de Aníbal was the first winery on the Canary Islands. In the 1980s, the owner planted 500 grape varieties that he had found on the island. Today, you can book tours and learn about the history of Canarian viticulture and the wines.
Lajares Walking Tour – Ascent to the volcano
5 Go back a few metres and turn left into a small alleyway that leads you steeply uphill past one of the most creative gardens in Lajares. The gravel path leads along the fields on the outskirts of the village and you can see the next destination on your Lajares Walking Tour from afar: The Calderon Hondo volcano and its neighbour, Montaña Colorada!
If you don’t want to climb the volcano on your own two feet, you can also make yourself comfortable on one of the camels and marvel at the volcanic landscape from a rocking desert boat. For everyone else: get on the path and up the volcano. After just 30 minutes, you will have reached the top of the first volcano. From there, on a clear day, you have a fantastic view as far as Lanzarote.
6 After the short detour to lofty heights, you make your way back to the centre of town. There you can treat yourself to a well-deserved break in our favourite ice cream parlour, Amiga Mia. Here you can not only enjoy delicious ice cream but also refreshing drinks.
7 You stroll on towards the market square. On Saturdays, there is a small but nice arts and crafts market including live music. So why not take the opportunity to look for handmade souvenirs? Around the market square you will find many more small shops and cafés that invite you to stroll and linger!
