Our partner Lava Reef Surf Coaching

Hello, I’m Simo!

The sea is my home, in the water I simply feel in my element. Even as a child I was constantly in the water – first playing water polo, then later on a surfboard.

My passion for surfing took me all the way to Australia, where I trained as a Level 2 ISA surf coach with Surfing Australia in Torquay, Victoria.

I love discovering new cultures and languages and am always on the lookout for the next perfect wave. My travels have taken me to so many incredible surf spots: the Canary Islands, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Australia, Indonesia, Peru, Morocco – and even the wave pools of England and Switzerland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prerequisites

Is there a minimum and maximum age for learning to surf?

Minimum age: 7 years. For younger children, Simo offers tailor-made options as part of the family surf course – just talk to him and you’ll find the right solution.

No maximum age. As long as you feel fit and are motivated to learn to surf, you are welcome to join us.

Surfing knows no age – you can start at any time. A basic level of fitness is important, as surfing challenges and strengthens the cardiovascular system. However, the technique and movement sequences can be learned at any age.

The surf courses are designed to meet the individual needs of each participant – whether in terms of age, fitness or learning speed. Your personal progress is the focus at Simo.

Do I have to be physically fit to surf?

Swimming is the only sporting requirement you need to have.

Especially at the beginning, surfing is mainly a question of technique – with the different take-off variations, we will get you safely on the board. It doesn’t matter whether you do sport regularly or not, because our lessons are adapted to your level.

A good basic level of fitness and good body awareness can speed up your progress, but are not a prerequisite for learning to surf successfully.

I have a pre-existing medical condition. Can I still take part?

Your safety in the water is Simo’s top priority. That’s why we ask you to inform him in advance of any pre-existing medical conditions. This way, he can adapt the course to your individual needs and ensure a safe and unforgettable surfing experience.

Procedure

When do lessons start at Lava Reef Surf Coaching?

There is no fixed start time, but you decide each day based on the conditions (tide, wave size, wind) when and where you go surfing.

Simo will let you know the time the day before.

How long does a surf lesson last?

One class lasts around 3 to 4 hours, including transfer to the surf spot, warm-up exercises, theoretical introduction and practical time in the water.

If you need a break in between, you are always free to retreat to the beach or the vehicle and enjoy the breathtaking view of the ocean.

In which language does the surf course take place?

Simo speaks English, Spanish, French and Italian.

What do I have to bring?

For your surf course, we recommend that you bring a towel or poncho, swimwear to wear underneath and sun protection.

If you don’t have your own surf equipment, Simo will of course provide you with it.

How warm is the water?

On Fuerteventura, the water temperature is between a pleasant 18 °C in winter and 22 °C in summer – so it never gets really cold here.

We provide you with a 3 mm wetsuit for your surf course, which will keep you reliably warm and protect you from the wind at the same time.

However, if you are particularly sensitive to the cold, we recommend that you either bring your own thicker wetsuit or wear additional lycra under your wetsuit. Talk to us – we will advise you individually and find the right solution so that you feel completely comfortable!
